Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi,Kahramanmaraş Objective: After cerebral metastasis, stroke is the second most important cause of cerebral symptoms in cancer patients. Studies documented that the causes of stroke could be different in systemic cancer patients as compared with patients without cancer. These studies also suggested that cerebrovascular events were frequently due to hypercoagulability. Hypercoagulability may lead to nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis, cerebral intravascular coagulation and venous occlusion in these patients. It was also reported that direct blood vessel compression by tumor or lebolization of tumor and treatment related side effects might lead to infarction. Ischemic stroke in systemic cancer patients was investigated in this study. Material and Methods: Imaging, laboratory and clinical findings of 8 ischemic stroke patients with cancer were retrospectively evaluated from hospital records. Results: Five ischemic stroke patients with cancer had similar findings with noncancer patients. However, 3 of the 8 patients had different clinical features. Although one of the 3 patients was old and had hypertension, his subacute progressive stroke with small vessel diseases could not be accounted to these risk factors. The remaining two were young stroke patients and conventional risk factors were not detected. Their primary cancers were Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and choriocarcinoma of testis. Conclusion: Although some stroke events in systemic cancer patients are similar in noncancer population, some may have different clinical pictures and etiopathogenic mechanisms. Keywords: Cerebrovascular accident; neoplasmsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2008, 28:450-455
