Objective: Subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) is among the most common shoulder disorders. The aims of this study were to evaluate the shoulder disability in patients with SIS and to determine the factors that affect disability. Material and Methods: Fourty patients with a diagnosis of SIS were included in this study. Demographic variables, affected shoulder and dominant hand were noted for all patients. Patients’ histories were collected in detail and shoulders were examined. Positive Neer, Hawkins Kennedy and subacromial injection tests in addition to shoulder pain were defined as SIS. Night pain was measured with visual analog scale (VAS) rating from 0-10 cm. For assessment of shoulder disability Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) was used. Results: The mean of SPADI score was 57.03 ± 22.01. Analyses of the total SPADI scores in groups according to gender, occupational risk, affected shoulder and involvement of dominant side revealed that the SPADI score was significantly higher in female gender than in males. Correlation analyses between the SPADI score and age and night pain demonstrated positive correlation only between night pain and the SPADI score. Conclusion: SIS leads to moderate shoulder disability mainly in female patients and night pain affects disability. In the evaluation of these patients, night pain must be asked carefully. Patients should be treated effectively to prevent the reduction in quality of life and loss of work capacity.
