Research Designs Frequently Used In Medical Studies: Review

To get true and significant results from any study, data obtained from the research must be analyzed and interpreted using the statistical techniques that are correctly chosen. As known, statistical analysis techniques can be applied to data provided from the studies that are well designed according to certain principles. It is impossible to evaluate the research reliably if these principles are not followed. Research must be planned and carried on so that within the minimum possible time and with minimum possible cost, exact and significant results can be obtained for certain possibilities. In this study, observational and experimental research designs that are frequently used in the medical field, rules to construct the designs correctly and providing the preconditions that are necessary for statistical analysis were discussed and some examples to research designs from the literature were given.Keywords: Research design; clinical trialsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2008, 28:500-507
