According to 2006 data, 39.5 million people live with HIV. This figure is 2.6 million higher than the number of cases in 2004. In many regions of the world, the new HIV-infected cases are noted primarily among young individuals within the 15-24 age groups. The aim of this study was to identify the incidence and prevalence rates of HIV/AIDS using the Ministry of Health data for 2000-2005 years to contribute to future studies and programs. Incidence and prevalence rates of HIV/AIDS were calculated by case numbers reported by the Ministry of Health, Primary Health Care General Directorate and demographic data obtained from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT). According to the Ministry of Health Primary Health Care General Directorate data, HIV/AIDS incidence rate was 0.23 per 100.000 in 2000, 0.27 per 100.000 in 2001 and 2002; 0.28 per 100.000 in 2003, 0.30 per 100.000 in 2004 and 0.46 per 100.000 in 2005. Prevalence rates were 0.02 per 1.000 in 2000-2003 and 0.03 per 1.000 in 2004 and 2005. According to the Ministry of Health Primary Health Care General Directorate data by sex, HIV/AIDS incidence rate was 0.38 per 100.000 in males and 0.18 per 100.000 in females and the prevalence rates were 0.03 per 1.000 in males and 0.02 per 1.000 in females in 2003. National Burden of Disease Study (NBD) revealed that HIV/AIDS incidence rate was 1.1 per 100.000 in 2003 and prevalence rate was 0.1 per 1.000 in 2003. Rates, which were measured by the MoH’s records and the NBD Study, were not consistent. It is essential to develop a post-diagnosis monitoring program by empowering the registry system and to provide counseling services.
