Lupus Overlap Syndrome: Medical Education
Dr. Deniz SEÇKİNa,Dr. Deren ÖZCANa
aDermatoloji AD, Başkent Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Ankara Autoimmune connective tissue diseases are classified according to international diagnostic criteria involving clinical features as well as laboratory findings including specific autoantibodies. However, the majority of patients, especially at early stages cannot be assigned to a single disease category since they have clinical and laboratory findings suggestive of an autoimmune connective tissue disease but not fulfilling the accepted diagnostic criteria for any of the defined connective tissue diseases. Some authors define these cases as undifferentiated disorders that may or may not develop into one of the well-defined autoimmune connective tissue diseases. Moreover, many autoimmune connective tissue diseases share common clinical and laboratory features, which make the specific diagnosis difficult. To define a connective tissue disease as overlapping connective tissue disease, the diagnostic criteria of two or more different autoimmune connective tissue diseases should be present. The prompt diagnosis of this group of diseases is very important for determining the prognosis and the effective treatment. In this article, after a short definition of autoimmune connective tissue diseases, overlapping connective tissue diseases, mixed connective tissue diseases, other lupus overlap syndromes, the associated diseases with lupus erythematosus and the treatment of lupus overlap syndromes will be reviewed. Keywords: Connective tissue diseases; mixed connective tissue disease;lupus erythematosus, systemicTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Sci 2008, 28:562-568
